Duplicolor Rust-Fix sucks, so I improvised. Bought a small steel-wire brush, sprayed phosphoric acid all over the panel, and went to work. Testament to Porsche’s rustproofing in the late ‘70s and early ‘ 80s, this was just surface and it came out clean.
Got a can of BBQ paint and did three coats . Also, the turbo is back in, and manhandling it past the axles and lining it up with the header while making sure the exhaust gasket didn’t get misaligned with one hand, and trying to bolt the one nut to the guide stud at the same time......Next time I’m pulling the engine.

We used BBQ paint on my brother’s Saab too. Turns out it had a higher temperature rating than the “car paint” that was available .

VHT e
xhaust header paint is rated 1500F I believe, brake caliper paint to like 300-ish. I think the typical engine enamel is good for 2-300 as well.

Regular 2 stage or body paint is heat resistant too. People commonly paint the engines of high dollar cars with the same paint as they paint the body with.

You know what, I remember what it was now. I was looking for engine paint, which was 500F, and the grill stuff was 1200F and a little cheaper too. Exhaust paint still has the higher rating (2000F for Rustoleum) , so yeah I should have been more specific than “car paint” .
Seems like the higher temp rating you need, the less of a color selection there is. Not sure if there’s a scientific reason for that, or if there’s just not much of a market for them to offer much variety on exhaust stuff. And since I was just looking for black paint, it w asn’t hard to find something suitable.

I like the spray paint aisle at Summit, it’s amazing the different colors of engine and exhaust paint VHT offers. You could have a pretty rainbow’ed engine bay if you wanted! Same deal with plasti-dip, they’ve got the whole spectrum.

On the bright side, we’re close enough it only takes a day or two to get stuff from Summit; in my experience at least, and as long as they have it in stock.

It’s so convenient
. Sure, there’s free shipping over $99 (I think) but it’s hard to beat driving down after work, checking out the scratch-n-dent, and picking up whatever parts you ordered, whether $10 or $1000
